Artist Statement

Trees have been a constant in my work, especially the bare branches of winter trees. A few years ago, I visited the Body Worlds exhibit where I saw a man, woman and child made only of their plasticized veins. I was immediately struck by the resemblance of the circulatory system to the tree forms that had always interested me. I started thinking about how the same forms, essentially systems of distribution and collection, occur all around us in geology (river systems and deltas), transportation (road & railroad systems), botany (branches and roots) and physiology (lungs, nervous system and circulatory system). This exhibit seeks to explore the universality of branching systems of distribution and collection, especially how they relate visually to the “tree” form.

Ken B. Miller: Biography

Ken has been making art for as long as he can remember. As a child he would spend hours working on elaborate drawings on poster board, creating vast and impossible cities and landscapes. When he was 12, he began experimenting with manipulating digital images on his first home computer. When he attended college at Pennsylvania State University, he studied graphic design, photography, art history, and computer animation, in addition to learning how to draw and paint with oils. Each new technique was a new tool for creating art, and the main focus of his work was to create art that was not constrained by technical limitations.

Through an international network of artists known as the “mail art network,” Ken has participated in scores of international exhibitions, and created his own projects including “Exquisite Square,” which had over 200 participants from 27 countries. From 1995 to 2005 he published Shouting at the Postman, which he wrote and designed both in print and on the Web.

Ken has been exhibiting his paintings since 1991, including shows at art galleries, Borders books, Pennsylvania State University, the Philadelphia Public Library, the Art Institute of Philadelphia and assorted coffee shops. He was a committee member of the Artists Guild of the Delaware Valley, and won several awards in their exhibitions. He became a member of the Highwire Gallery in March 2004, where he exhibited “Assembly” in September 2004 and “Recessive Traits” in November 2005.

Ken currently resides with his wife and daughter in Bucks County and is employed as a graphic designer for a silk-screening company.
