Artists Make A Case for Art

The inventive spirit of Benjamin Franklin has returned to Philadelphia to take up residence in some very unlikely places. Twenty-eight artists are creating artworks in wooden briefcase forms salvaged from an old Philadelphia briefcase factory. Made from every imaginable material and expressing a true independence of spirit, the cases are thought-provoking and original. The project is sponsored by Philadelphia Sculptors and is one of the events connected to the Ben Franklin 300 Philadelphia celebration. Most of the cases chosen for “A Case for Art” will include visual references to the life and writings of Benjamin Franklin, and all the cases will be installed indoors throughout Philadelphia in public and private venues accessible to the public.

The artists participating in the project are:
Kathy Bruce, Kt Carney, Cora Lee Charpentier, Raye Cohen, George Cooke, Joe DiGiuseppe, Chris Golas & Josh Kerner, Elizabeth Doering & Vazgen Pahlavuni-Tadevosyan, Colette Fu, Kay Gering, Daniel Hoffman, Deborah Imler & Allen Spencer, Darla Jackson, Kimi Kaplowitz, Leslie Kaufman, Courtney Kessel, Elizabeth Mackie, Claire Marcus, Joan Menapace, Constantin Nazarie, Sarah Olinger-Stout, Janet Penn, Laura Pritchard, Ryan Roth, Holly Smith, Pamela Sprecher, Dina Wind, Etta Winigrad, and Nancy Wright

Before spreading out to different locations, the cases will be displayed at a special sneak preview exhibition at Highwire Gallery, 1315 Cherry St., 4th floor in Philadelphia, from August 10 - August 24, 2005. A public opening reception will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2005, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. From August 26 - November 7, 2005, the cases will be displayed in locations in Center City and adjacent neighborhoods. Viewers will be able to chart the locations with the help of a colorful map available at the individual venues and at tourist locations throughout Philadelphia.

To further create interest and provide entertainment, there will be an interactive “Benjamin Franklin Scavenger Hunt.” Signs will encourage viewers to search each work for a Franklin reference. When they find it, they can write their response on a pre-addressed postcard to be mailed to Philadelphia Sculptors to be eligible for prizes.

Other events accompanying the city-wide exhibition include a reception at the Rosenwald Wolf Gallery at the University of the Arts on Friday, October 28 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. This reception will be in conjunction with the Center City Arts and Culture Week Gallery Night. To conclude the exhibition, all the cases will be exhibited at Wexler Gallery in Old City from November 8 - 12, 2005. On November 12, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., the public is invited to an auction of the cases at Wexler Gallery.

Venues hosting the cases include the Bell Atlantic Tower, Buck's Induserve Supply, City Hall, Fleisher Art Memorial, Free Library of Philadelphia, Gershman Y, Highwire Gallery, K Hovnanian Homes, Lights of Liberty, Lord and Taylor, National Constitution Center, OLC, PAFA Café, Penn’s View Hotel, Philadelphia Building, Robert’s, Robinson Luggage, The Shops at Liberty Place, Tower Records, Usona, and University of the Arts.
